Englische Lieder

Im Frühling 2013 hat mich der Hueber Verlag in München gefragt, ob ich für das neue Englisch-Lehrwerk “Go For It!” ein paar Lieder machen könnte. Ich hab’s probiert – und stelle nachträglich erfreut fest, dass ich diese Lieder (bis vielleicht auf das erste, den “Alphabet Song”) gerne auch dann singen werde, wenn es gar nicht ums Englischlernen geht, sondern einfach nur um Lieder.

Family Life

It’s nice to have a big family.
You always have someone to talk with.
You always have someone to talk about.
You always have someone to walk with.
I have a very big family:
Two fathers and three mothers.
We’re all together in a lovely house
with nine sisters and seventeen brothers.


I have twenty-three uncles and thirty-five aunts
and nieces and nephews no end,
and cousins and grandparents more than I want –
but what I don’t have is a friend.
A friend is so lovely, a friend is so nice.
To have a nice friend is great.
I’d give you my family for one good friend –
or two, or seven, or eight!

On Mondays I go swimming in the morning,
and at lunchtime I play classical guitar.
On Tuesdays I play football or do judo.
In the evening I play chess in a hotel bar.
On Wednesdays I go climbing or hiking.
Sometimes I like to surf or walk or ski.
So I never, never, never,

no, I never have the time to watch TV.

Thursday is the day I do aerobics.
In the afternoon I do the gardening.
Friday is the day I go to concerts.
On Saturdays, I play the violin.
On Sundays I play volleyball or tennis
and do karate or sometimes t’ai chi.
So I never, never, never,

no, I never have the time to watch TV.

I can’t sleep

I can’t sleep. I am so hungry.
I’d better get up and see what’s in the fridge.
Oh, there’s some cheese and bread and butter.
That’s a nice little snack.

Holiday Seasons

Springtime in Paris in a lovely hotel,
tasting great food and great wine.
Seeing the Louvre, the Champs Elysées,
when it’s warm and the weather is fine.
April or May is the time to go away
on a trip to this beautiful town.
But I, I must stay, I have no holiday
and must work until the sun goes down.

Summer in Cornwall, a cottage, green grass,
a boat in Carlyon Bay.
Walking on the beach, looking at the sea,
sleeping and resting all day.
June and July is the right time to fly,
fly away to some beautiful lake.
But I, I must stay, I have no holiday,
and must work as long as I am awake.

Autumn in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont.
Hillsides all yellow and red.
Indian summer, long walks in fresh air,
late dinners, breakfast in bed.
Winter is near, the end of the year,
when we all celebrate its last night.
And I’m sure, in the end,
with some days off, my friend,
everything will be all right.

Can You Tell Me Where

Excuse me, can you tell me
where to find a sweet darling?
Can you tell me the way to my true love? –
        No problem, take the Hogwarts Train.
        It brings you up to Penny Lane.
        From there, you’d better use your feet.
        Walk all the way down Baker Street
        and straight on to Trafalgar Square.
        Your true love must be there … somewhere.
Thanks a lot! And can you make
a guess: How long does it take? –
        A hundred years or half a day …
        It’s really very hard to say.

Excuse me, can you tell me

Can you tell me the way to my true love? –
        Go down the road, and when you meet
        King Kong, turn into Bleecker Street.
        Turn right and go to Central Park.
        (And please don’t whistle in the dark.)
        From there you go on to the zoo:
        And there’s your love so sweet … and true. –
Thanks a lot! How kind you are!
But tell me: Is it very far? –
        Ten thousand miles or half a yard …
        It’s hard to say, so very hard!

        The subway station is right here.
        Don’t look at the PayPoint machine
        but take the Yellow Submarine
        right up to Coronation Street.

        Five million pounds or two pounds ten …
